Abigail's Experience
The most satisfying feeling was witnessing the smile on the child's face after he or she earned the winnings for the 9-12 Ribbon Roping. Everything that is done is done for the children and that special moment. I am blessed to have received the opportunity to take in such an experience.
My time working with the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo was more than just a seasonal job. The Job Description for the internship was described as:
"The livestock and horse shows host a variety of competitive events and educational activities. The candidate will work closely with volunteers and staff in organizing and carrying out the daily office tasks. Duties will include but are not limited to the following: responding to exhibitors’ inquiries, marketing and communications, show entry management, posting of show results, daily office duties, accounting, and data entry. Positions are full-time and extended work hours may be required."
The most important useful skill of the internship was communication and planning.
There were days when the hours were long and exhausting but the director was more than willing to give us a few minutes to take a break. As the accounting intern, walking to the feed stores and back to the main office more than once a day, I walked an average of 9 miles a day. On the plus side, the "Horse-pitality" was generous enough to make us and the exhibitors, breakfast and lunch everyday. My responsibilities were to plan the farrier schedule, handle all money coming in and out of the horse show department, inventory the awards, prepare for the scholarship presentations, organize, print lots of labels, run errands that were needed, help the horse committee in any way possible, and most of all using quality customer service to the visitors and exhibitors as needed.
This internship was more than just a work experience for me. If you love children, planning and the agriculture world then this is the internship for you.
